Shopping: Chalk up a new hair color

If you need to color your hair for Halloween (or just for the heck of it), then Hot Huez Hair Chalk could be just what you need. This 'As Seen on TV' product is a set of four small compacts, each with a disk of colored chalk inside. Colors include electric blue and fiery fuchsia. To use the product, you open the compact, slip your hair in, press and pull. You can watch a video at hothuez.com. It washes out easily. You'll find the kit at Walgreens for $9.99. I saw it at the store on Frank Scott Parkway and Anderson Lane.

Brighten up your family room or breakfast bar with bar stools that have seats that resemble giant bottlecaps. The shiny metal round stools have food rests and the height is adjustable. You'll find the stool seats in red, royal blue or black for $69.99 each at Garden Ridge in O'Fallon. This retailer offers vast array of bar seating from which to choose choices.

At 99 cents each at the Cracker Barrel gift shop, tiny ceramic salt and pepper shakers shaped like turkeys, pumpkins and acorns will add autumn colors to your table. Buy a couple sets and put them at various places on a buffet table, too. I found them at the restaurant gift shop in Shiloh, where the shop also has a spooky-clever Halloween item called Animated Blinking Eyes. Attach them to a window or door with the included suction cups and the bloodshot eyes light up and glow. You can see them well from a distance. Cost is $14.99, plus you'll need three AAA batteries. No bulb or LED light to burn out, though.

White House/Black Market, a women's clothing store, has opened in the former location of Banana Republic at the Shoppes at St. Clair by the mall in Fairview Heights. To celebrate, through Nov. 3, you'll get $20 off your full-price purchase of $80 or more.

Baseball fans: Wear your team apparel to the Chick-Fil-A in the Food Court at the mall on game day and get a free sandwich with the purchase of large waffle fries and a large drink through October.

Last week I mentioned the opening of home decor and gifts retailer Kirkland's outside the mall. Join the grand opening celebration today and Sunday with free in-store design consultations by Ginger Huff Interiors, tote bags given to the first 50 customers who make a purchase and a complimentary mini-jar candle with purchase while supplies last. All customers who bring a nonperishable food item to donate to Operation Food Search will receive 10 percent off their purchases.

Kirkland's will also be giving away a $500 shopping spree gift card to celebrate, and all sachets will be available at three for $5.

You have until Sunday to buy a $5 Pink Pony Pin at Ralph Lauren inside Macy's at St. Clair Square and get 20 percent off storewide (with some exceptions). A portion of the pin proceeds, $3.50, goes to a fund to fight cancer.

Stock up now for Christmas at Toys R Us with a Lego construction set sale: Buy one and get one for 40 percent off. There are a few restrictions, of course. Get a free five-pack of Lego minifigures when you spend $60 or more on Lego construction sets or board game. Deals are good only through today.

Also through today, if you have Fiestaware at home and you need to replace some pieces or buy a new set (our yellow ones are looking sad after 17 years of use), check out the sale going on at Kohl's: five-piece place settings for $29.99, regularly $51. Accessory pieces are 30-40 percent off.

Menard's in O'Fallon has a lighting sale going on now: You can mix and match your Hunter vanity light fixture and glass globes. Choose the finish on your fixture (rubbed bronze or brushed nickel) and size, with sale prices from $9.99 to $24.99. Then, choose your glass shade style. Each is $5.99. Prices good through Oct. 19.
