Yesterday, Katie Holmes had a long day. It started with hairstyling around 6 a.m. for an appearance on Good Morning America. After a nap, shopping at Sephora, meetings, and errands, Holmes finally took a seat at the John Barrett Salon at Bergdorf Goodman in NYC, ending her day as it began: with hairstyling. She got her chocolate brown locks curled as we chatted. Speaking in that girl-next-door Joey Potter voice, she told us her favorite benefit of dry shampoo: 'Sometimes you want to sleep in a bit.'
The 34-year-old fashion designer and actress addressed a room of 30 women sipping wine, sparkling water, and champagne, eager to try new products by Alterna Haircare, the brand she co-owns and is a brand ambassador for. While much to our dismay, Holmes' darling daughter, Suri Cruise, was not in attendance, we did get a quick chance to chat about the mini style muse and all things hair.
You're not just the face, but a co-owner, of Alterna. Why was it important to serve both roles?
It was a wonderful opportunity to be a part of the collaboration and really get to know the products and give my point of view. The philosophy behind [the brand is that it's] full of wonderful ingredients and [it's] paraben-free—very high quality. I think that's important.
The products are comprised of all-natural and organic components, do you keep a similar standard within other aspects of your life?
I try to have as many organic cleaning products and organic food in my home, and be as healthy as possible.
You've lived in New York City for a little more than a year now. How has living in the city had an impact on your beauty routine?
Because it's not the cleanest city in the world, I get more facials. You're a little bit more aware because the city does drip on you, literally.
How often do you get facials?
About once a week.
Tell us about the rest of your beauty regimen.
I work out a lot, and I drink a lot of water. I try to eat well and maintain a healthy lifestyle, with the exception of a few french fries! I try to work out five times a week. I'm not so obsessed, but I'm constantly walking around the city. I do spinning and running and yoga. I switch it up.
What are your guilty pleasures besides french fries?
I'm a huge sweets fan. I have a huge sweet tooth.
Are you a fan of makeup, or not so much?
I like makeup. Bobbi Brown makes great makeup. I like her makeup because it doesn't look like makeup. I should probably know the color of the foundation that I wear. That would be helpful, at this point. Every makeup artist asks me: 'What color? What do you like to use?' I'm like, 'Whatever color you think is right!'
How do you define beauty to Suri?
Beauty is kindness, thoughtfulness, and being a good friend.
How do you teach her to be a good friend and to be thoughtful?
