Hair salon moves to 'dream' location in Depot District

BERWYN - Katie Cowell has had her eye on a Depot District storefront ever since she got into the business of cutting hair. On Oct. 8, Cowell got her wish and hosted the grand opening of the relocated Big Tease Hair Salon at 6733 W. Stanley Ave.

Cowell and members of the Berwyn Development Corporation gathered at the newly remodeled location to celebrate the occasion. The salon was formerly located at 3118 S. Oak Park Ave.

Cowell, who graduated from Morton West High School and later from Cameo Beauty Academy in Oak Lawn, began her career as a hair stylist at the Hair Stop before she bought the business and renamed it Big Tease Hair Salon. The business caters to women, men and children alike.

The Stanley Avenue storefront had once been a hair salon, and Cowell jumped at the chance to cut hair in what was her dream location after she renovated the space.

'After 10 years, I am so happy to finally have my business open in my dream location, and I hope to contribute to the success of the Stanley Ave Collectors Row,' Cowell stated. 'I thank my friends, family and customers for helping make this move smooth.'

Mayor Robert Lovero complimented Cowell on the renovation and said he was confident of her success 'as your reputation precedes you,' he said.

Through the support of the city of Berwyn and the BDC, Big Tease Hair Salon received Tax Increment Financing for interior build-out, including plumbing, electrical and carpentry on the 1,100-square-foot storefront formerly occupied by Serendipity Antiques.

The salon employs three full-time stylists and one part-time nail tech. Big Tease is open six days per week. More information can be found by searching Big Tease Salon on Facebook.
