The New Natural Hair Color Trend To Try

Have you noticed the new hair color trend to hit the salons? Babylights are the latest dye job to catch the eyes and strands of Hollywood. The idea behind the oh-so subtle look is simple: babylights mimic natural hair color.

'Think of children who have natural highlights, which then fade as they get older,' says Josie Sanchez, master stylist at Dop Dop Salon in New York City. 'Babylights add subtle dimension to the hair through delicate placements of color that is complementary to your base shade.'

To accomplish this understated look, colorists tend to stick to one shade lighter to enhance hair's natural color to brighten up the face, says Sanchez. This can be done through the balayage technique of coloring, where colorists actually paint the dye directly onto the hair. Although this technique is commonly used for ombrè hair, babylights also require the process-in this case, only using very small, fine pieces of hair to create the effect.

The trend is seeing popularity among several big stars, including Karlie Kloss and Taylor Swift. We're intrigued by the look not only for its super subtle appearance but for its minimal grow out. Sanchez explains one of the main benefits of babylights is that as the highlights grow out, the color will simply soften into your base shade.

Do babylights sound like a hair trend you could get on board with? There's a few things to keep in mind before taking the (subtle) jump. Don't expect any 'wow' factor when getting babylights. 'The look is natural and complements your base color by enhancing it and adding dimension,' says Sanchez. 'Babylights are also great for someone who is not ready to fully commit to color but is looking to enhance their existing base color.'
