Does Natural Hair Have a Place in the Corporate World?

Natural hair is all the rage! Whether you wish to look at this as a trend or a statement, the fact remains that more and more women are considering flaunting their natural manes. Muli Musyoka has been vocal about protecting natural hair. His clinic, the Hair Hub Trichology Centre in Nairobi is all about treating hair loss and he is in fact the only Trichologist in Sub-Saharan Africa. While the natural hair wave is catching up in Kenya, we're still not sure about how natural hair can fit into the corporate world. The natural hairstyles we see today are mostly funky and edgy, not what you'd expect to find in your average workplace.

The question we ask today is; does natural hair have a place in the corporate world? We sought to get more information on this subject from the expert.

The corporate world has really evolved and it is willing to have employees wear hair that they are comfortable in as long as their output is not interfered with. Moreover, natural hair does not necessarily mean neglected or unkempt hair.

Natural hair can look good on everybody; what matters is the style and how it suits the wearer. I think there is a proverbial measure of beauty which society has pushed women to believe that long hair equals beauty. Most people wear weaves because they are looking for convenience which is now being offered by natural hair. The negative side of too much weaving is hair loss.

Yes, afros can look stunning and presentable. Just like relaxed hair, weaves or wigs; the key thing is how you style your hair. Afro ethnic hair is naturally curly and if these curls are enhanced with a professional styling touch then one can comfortably walk into any office looking as professional as anyone can get.

I would say to tame is harsh word. All of us are looking for manageability and the challenge we have is the tight curl that we have. However there are different products that have been launched in our market that can moisturize, strengthen and help in redefining the natural curl or wavy hair into a soft manageable mane. The most basic thing is to use low or sulfate free shampoos once a week. Also, deep condition your hair frequently to ensure that you achieve ultimate hair health.
