When temperatures drop, turn up your hair care: Salon Vanity's Susan Gambone gives tips on prepping hair for the fall/winter seasons

'Your hair has gotten long. Let's keep it this length and clean it up. I don't even want to add any layers,' says Salon Vanity hairstylist Susan Gambone while eyeing up my hair at my last appointment. Forty-five minutes later, I walked out of the Center City celebrity hot spot with just that -- long, healthy hair flawlessly blown out (as evident by my constant neck-swiveling, hair-flipping strut down Chestnut Street).

Q: When the weather gets colder and the air drier, should your shampoo/conditioner change as well?

A: Yes, I highly recommend switching up your shampoo and conditioner. Use something hydrating -- it will help with dryness and frizz. If you are concerned with it weighing your hair down, just apply a dime size of the conditioner to your ends.

Q: How often do you recommend getting your hair trimmed?

A: I recommend getting your hair trimmed every 6-8 weeks. It will keep its shape and you will avoid split ends.

Q: What's the best way to preserve color as people tend to use blow-dryers and hot styling tools more frequently in the fall/winter?

A: If you find your hair color fading, try using color-protecting shampoo and use cool water. In the cooler weather, your blow-outs should last longer so you shouldn't have to wash your hair as much.

Q: Cold air = Static Hair. Any tips to prevent it?

A: Winter static is the worst and I think almost everyone has this issue. I recommend using a dryer sheet and running it through your hair as the best-kept secret! Anything with moisture will also help with static.

Q: With the frequent blow-drying in the winter, what are your tips to protect hair from heat damage?

A: I recommend using heat-protecting products and actually using them! Use about a quarter size before your blow-dry and if you use good products you should have no damage.

Q: What are your favorite hair products right now?

A: My favorite hair product right now is the Kerastase line using one of the heat protectants layered with the Elixir Ultime is the magic combo, especially for this time of year. Works every time!
