Jenn Slifka, owner of Chateau de Chic is feeling a little more zen after a trip to the City of Angels. It all began when Slifka's salon representative brought the district manager for Sexy Hair products to Spring Valley to show off her salon. 'He (the salon rep) always tells us we are his favorite group of girls and he thinks we should open up shop in Rochester. He loves our creative vibe and innovative concepts,' Slifka explained. 'He (the district manager) was so impressed that he offered to send me to the Sexy Hair Institute of Courage, all expenses paid.' So on June 22, Slifka began her solo trip to Los Angeles to partake in two-day training session at the institute, which is a private villa in the Topanga Hills designed by Michael O'Rourke, the founder of Sexy Hair, and specifically built to train stylists. During the sessions, stylists were taught the company's 'cutting in motion' method. 'It is incorporating tai chi with everything you do while cutting hair so that your body is feeling less strain,' Slifka explained. 'It is also a way to prolong your career.' Though it was a type of martial art originally developed for self-defense, tai chi is now known more for its health benefits. Its slow, graceful movements have proven to have a healing effect on muscle strength, flexibility and balance. 'It was definitely relaxing and interesting at the same time. I enjoyed the company of the stylists I was with, as well as, the trainers. The entire trip was a lot of fun and very renewing,' Slifka expressed. She plans to teach the rest of Chateau's stylists the tips and tricks she learned during her time at the institute. 'I have returned with a lot of great ideas for our team, including teambuilding, event ideas, salon setup and design, as well as, fun new things for our clients.' Slifka hopes to continue to take part in more trips and training sessions in the future since she reveled in being around all the other salon owners from around the country and sharing knowledge so they could learn from each others' experiences. 'I really enjoyed traveling by myself and experiencing this new part of my career. I hope that in the future I will be able to get out of the salon more and experience this industry in different ways,' she said. 'I absolutely love my job and being at the salon is so great each and every day. The Institute of Courage just made me realize even more how amazing this industry is and how much it has to offer.'
