Limerick pharmacist onto a winner with Mane 'n Tail haircare brand

Jim McCormack

Two years ago Limerick pharmacist and commercial horse breeder Jim McCormack went to the US for a horse and came back with a hair care brand which he plans to sell into the UK from Ireland.

He first came across Mane 'n Tail in equine outlets while in Keenland, Kentucky, as a brand leader in the horse grooming product section, but was amazed to find the same brand that same week in Walmart as one of its biggest hair care sellers for women.

Within days McCormack visited Straight Arrow products and met Devon B Katzev, the company president whose father started the equine shampoo business on the family horse farm in New Jersey.

The original Mane 'n Tail shampoo and conditioner, specifically produced with micro-enriched protein formulas for show horses, soon attracted interest from horse owners who discovered that just a tiny amount of Mane 'n Tail similarly transforms human hair.

During the visit to the Straight Arrow manufacturing facility in Pennsylvania with Devon B Katzev, the deal was done to introduce Mane 'n Tail to the Irish market and also sell into the UK.

McCormack Distribution was established in 2011, and an investment of €150,000 in year one saw warehousing and a small team established to sell Mane 'n Tail.

The first retail outlet to stock Mane 'n Tail was McCormack's own pharmacy in Limerick, and pharmacy accounts across Munster followed.

With practically no marketing support, trial and word of mouth saw Mane 'n Tail sales grow rapidly, a trend which has continued through the first two full years' trading, according to McCormack.

McCormack Distribution now has seven employees; there is countrywide distribution in place, and the complete Mane 'n Tail range is available in pharmacies right across Ireland, including Boots, McCabe's, McCauley's, Cara, and Lloyds.

In 2014 there has seen a significant investment in PR, marketing, and web development for Mane 'n Tail, including title sponsorship of the 2014 Miss Ireland beauty pageant.
