New salon with focus on natural hair texture opens in downtown Ann Arbor

A new salon that specializes in working with each client's natural hair texture will open in downtown Ann Arbor Tuesday.

Oz Hair Studio, located at 202 East Washington Street, Suite 312, is owned by former Above Ground Hair Studio stylists Julie Garza, Andrew Evans and Ryan Groesbeck.

Garza said when she learned Above Ground, which was located on South State Street, would not longer be seeing clients, she knew it was the right time to open her own salon.

'Ryan, Andrew and I loved working with each other so when we were told Above Ground might not be there anymore, we decided to look for our own space,' Garza said. 'We love doing what we do so much and we didn't want to work for someone else who might have us change the techniques we learned at Above Ground.'

The 400-square-foot space, leased from Cabrio Properties, is decorated with repurposed wood and other recycled and local materials.

'We wanted to support local business and industry by using local materials in our studio and we wanted to be as green as possible at the same time,' Garza said. 'After a lot of work, we've made the space our own. It is a small, intimate and comfortable space, which is exactly what we wanted.'

Three chairs and two shampoo bowls with portable hair dryers line the room.

'We're really excited about the space and even prior to opening, we have appointments lined up,' Garza said. 'We've each collected our own clients, so we should have around 250 people coming with us to Oz Hair Studio to start with.'

The new studio will cater to both men and women and will work with all types of hair, Garza said.

'At Above Ground there was a focus on curly hair,' Garza said. 'But the new studio specializes in everything from super straight, fine hair to thick and curly hair. It's a big range.'

Oz Hair Studio offers a variety of services including haircuts, trims, eyebrow and lip waxing, up-dos, styling and coloring.

Appointments can be made online at www.ozhairstudio.com. Oz Hair Studio is open 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Saturday.

Student and first-time visitor discounts are available.
