Rihanna's stylist, Ursula Stephen talks about AMAs 'Icons' Doobie Hairstyle ...

Sunday, Twitter slammed Rihanna's Doobie hairstyle for the 2013 American Music Awards, and was later accused of stealing the infamous look from an underground New York female rapper, Patwa. In an with Elle.com, Rihanna's hairstylist Ursula Stephen opened up about who made the decision for the Doobie look on the red carpet and expressed that the look has been done before and was made public in the 1930's.

Whose idea was it for Rihanna to wear a doobie wrap?

It was actually Rihanna's idea. She had her mind made up! Honestly, I was a little hesitant but I knew she could pull it off, so I was all for it.

Some interpreted the style to mean Rihanna is nonchalant about her AMAs honor while others felt it was a unique and clever nod to her culture at a time when the world was watching. What statement were you and Rihanna trying to make?

It was a nod to fashion! This is a style that can be worn by some of the most beautiful actresses in Hollywood.

The wrap actually has roots in the '30s finger waves hairstyle, and with the embellished pins, it channeled Old Hollywood. Were the pins a request Rihanna made or your own design decision? What did they bring to the look?

Yes, the '30s were all about [the wrap]! The pins helped to elevate the look from just your average doobie.

There's been quite a bit of backlash from some members of the African-American and Latina community, who feel the wrap should be relegated to the bedroom. How do you respond to that criticism?

Everyone has an opinion. However, the doobie has been worn to Bergdorf Goodman. They just haven't been paying attention. And it's been around since the '30s. Part of my job is to know eras, trends and fashion, and to keep looks alive by adding a modern twist.

According to TheYBF, the rapper's former manager, Trumaine Ferguson the doobie look for Patwa was a resemblance of a ghetto crown for the reggae, hip-hop infused rapper.

Ferguson told the site the look was so unique that Def Jam executives said the look was too hood for White America to embrace it. The former manager bashed Rihanna for stealing the original look telling TheYBF, 'During 2010 we began generating a buzz in the underground hip hop community. This lead to a couple of meeting with some big wigs at def jam, Geffen, Atlantic and yes Roc nation who manages Rihanna. While meeting with A&Rs with these labels we were continuously told that the imagery we were trying to brand was not 'lady like' was 'to street', 'to hood' and 'to ghetto' we were told that 'white America would never get behind such ignorance'.

The rapper's manager added, 'Ratchetness had yet to become an accepted house hold term. The image we were trying to run with was what Patwa knew from the streets which was the doobie wrap. She wore it proudly with jeweled pins to signify she was a Queen and this was her ghetto crown. Something that many females coming from where she came from could relate to. You know when you get that hair wrapped you feel like the Bomb You just got your hair did no one could tell you nothing.'

Ferguson added that Rihanna seen Patwa's look and stole the hairstyle after a bride encounter in 2011, 'I honestly felt violated. You see during 2011 Patwa and I crossed paths with Rihanna at a Roc Nation event. Rihanna, who on that evening was wearing a hairstyle that she 'borrowed' from Cassie, complimented the jeweled pin wrap said it looked nice and even inquired as to who did it?'

Patwa's former manager isn't too upset with Rihanna, but with the music executives that dubbed the look 'ghetto.'

'By no means did we invent the doobie wrap or name. However prior to the AMA's no one had attempted to wear the doobie as a hairstyle in public. No one!!!!!! I just find it very insulting that something we brought to those people was too 'ghetto'. But now Rihanna can accept awards while proudly displaying it. I am really hurt by this and wanted to scream.'
