It's sort of a full circle story.
Charles Reighard started working as a professional hair stylist 38 years ago inside Pietro's Hair Salon in Calder Square. Now, Reighard has handed his own salon, which was open for business for 32 years, over to Pietro's, so he can retire.
'It's like a 360. It's so ironic that Pietro's would be taking over my business,' says Reighard.
Officially, Hair Loft by Charles in Greenwich Court off of East Calder Way became Pietro's Hair Salon Aug.1. It will be Pietro's second location. The other shop is located on South Atherton Street.
Lucy Pellicciotta and Tina Pellicciotta, mother and daughter, will own and operate both salons.
Reighard grew up in his mother's salon in Claysburg. After earning an associate's degree through Penn State, Reighard followed his calling and attended Empire Beauty School.
'I just love my clients and making the world a brighter and happier place. Making everyone look and feel good,' he says.
After working for a few years at Pietro's he opened his own salon on East College Avenue. Ten years ago, he downsized and moved to Greenwich Court. Technically, Reighard retired in mid-July and he already misses parts of the job.
'I miss the chit-chat, the camaraderie with the customers, jut being connected to all of my friends. They were my friends. They're not just customers. They're my family,' Reighard says.
When asked if he has any memorable moments from working in the salon, Reighard laughed.
'I have a joke that I want to write a book about what goes on behind the chair. If these chairs could talk ...' he says.
Reighard and his wife have been married for nearly 35 years. His wife will retire from Penn State at the end of the year. The couple always wanted to retire by age 60.
'We're accomplishing that,' he says.
Both active dog handlers, their free time will be filled with showing bulldogs across the country and spending time with grandchildren.
'I'm just so thankful for the 38 years of success I've had with all of my friends and clients,' Reighard says. 'I'm going to miss everyone. But I'm going to be around town.'
Eileen Cramer, who works in Reighard's shop and will be part of Peitro's staff, says the salon isn't quite the same since Reighard retired.
'It's been pretty quiet without talking with him and his customers,' she says. 'It's been a pleasure working with him. He's an awesome man. He's very loving, giving and easy to get along with.'
