Top beauty trends to try this autumn

Airbrushed skin

While we can get away with a hint of a tan throughout the summer months in autumn we need a little more coverage.

'Achieving amazing skin can be a challenge but this season it is all about the flawless, almost air-brushed Kim Kardashian look,' says Bobbi Brown Pro Artist Hannah Martin.

Start by applying a highlighter down the bridge of your nose, along cheekbones and on the forehead.

This gives a more natural finish. Next apply your chosen foundation to your nose and then smooth it outwards over your face.

For full coverage use a sponge and remember to blend well along your jaw and hairline.

BEST NEW BUYS: YSL's Fusion Foundation, £30.50 (debenhams.com) is a super lightweight formula that offers an exceptional level of flawless coverage with a luminous, velvety matte finish. Lasting up to 24 hours, it is the perfect choice for the time-poor modern woman.

For a more lightweight finish try Bobbi Brown's Skin Weightless Powder Foundation, £33 (bobbibrown.co.uk). You can wear a little or layer it up for more coverage and also use it to set other foundations.

According to MAC's senior artist Rebecca Butterworth this autumn's key colour trend is Nineties grunge.

'Colours are a bit off key with undertones of grey and we are seeing eye shadows in khaki and mustard.

'It is a bit different from your usual browns and greys and makes things more interesting and real.'

Smudge a darker colour around the eye line, which will create a much softer finish than a pencil or a liquid liner.

Next use a lighter shade, such as mustard, to build up colour over the lid, blending it gently as you go.

BEST NEW BUYS: MAC's Artificially Wild collection, launching in October, includes wearable shades in a range of khakis, taupes and browns.

Prices start from £12.50 for a lip pencil (maccosmetics.co.uk).

For a more subtle take on the classic smoky eye try Bobbi Brown's Smokey Nude Eye Palette, £48, which features a mixture of matte and shimmering shades.

'This season marks the return of mascara, something we've avoided on the catwalks of late,' says Rebecca.

'Eyes were really big and blackened at the Missoni show with lots of mascara, lashes clumped together and smudged eyeshadow on outer corners of the eyes. It is very Sixties but feels more undone.'

BEST NEW BUYS: L'Oreal's Volume Million Lashes So Couture Mascara, £10.99 (superdrug.com) adds length and volume, creating a strong, smouldering look.

Lancôme's Grandiose Mascara, £24.50 (lancome.co.uk) has a swan-neck wand that follows the eye's natural curve and allows for a good coating of every single lash.

The full, thick brow made popular by model Cara Delevingne last year is still a big trend this season.

'This trend is about finding a way to make your brows look bushy, not about painting them in so it looks like make-up,' says L'Oreal make-up ambassador Lynsey Alexander.

'There are a whole range of brow-growth serums on the market that work to thicken brows.

BEST NEW BUYS: L'Oreal's new Brow Plumper, £5.99 (boots.com) is out next month. It uses special fibres that coat your existing hair to give you a fuller brow.

Add colour to your brows with Giorgio Armani's Eye and Brow Maestro collection, £26.50 (armanibeauty.co.uk). It features nine waterproof shades.

Go for the chop

'From elfin, textured crops to geometric, blunt wedges, short hair is a key trend for autumn,' says stylist to the stars Richard Ward. 'Models Jourdan Dunn and Karlie Kloss sported sharp, structured pixie crops in the Oscar de la Renta show earlier this year.

'Tidy up post-holiday tresses with a razor-sharp feminine look. Remember to keep it layered to add movement.'

BEST NEW BUYS: Use the Richard Ward Keratin Styling Spray, £5.99 (waitrose.com) to emphasise layers and create a choppy look.

Add volume and texture without dehydrating hair with the paraben-free Bamboo Volume 2-in-1 Volumizer from Alterna, £24 (01925 578000).

Stretch your roots

When your highlights start to grow out don't rush to the hairdressers to have them redone.

Instead, embrace a new trend called root stretching. This involves applying a dye (as close to your natural colour as possible) to the area where the top of your highlights meet the root regrowth to blur the line.

'The technique softens the upper edges of your highlights with a darker shade to create the illusion of an overall healthy, refreshed and shiny autumnal look,' says Marc Trinder, art team director at Charles Worthington.

'First seen on the Burberry catwalk, it is going to be a massive celebrity hair trend for the autumn with Cheryl Fernandez-Versini and Jennifer Lopez already huge fans.'

BEST NEW BUYS: Keep roots looking shiny and healthy with Bumble & Bumble's new Hairdresser's Invisible Oil primer, £19 (boots.com).

Infused with six feather-light oils, it helps nourish hair without creating excess oil.

Show off your stretched roots by creating a sharp, defined parting using Toni & Guy's Hair Meet Wardrobe Classic Cool Defining Cream, £7.19 (boots.com).

Tone it down

'When it comes to colour this autumn think smoky hues,' says colourist Josh Wood. 'When you want to make the subtlest change to brunette hair just add a cool smoky hue over the top to give an edge. Blondes should play with a smoky pink or muted mauve gloss,' adds Josh.

BEST NEW BUYS: If you want to embrace this colour trend without having to commit permanently to a shade try Bleach Hair Crayons, £4 (boots.com). You can build up colour as desired.

Blondes can remove any brassy tones with the Fudge Clean Blonde Violet Toning Shampoo, £11.95 (fudgehair.co.uk).

Think masculine

'Seasons have a profound effect on us from how we feel to what we do,' says perfumer Roja Dove.

'Masculine fragrances often come to the forefront at this time of year, favoured for being heavier than their summer counterparts.'

BEST NEW BUYS: Launching next week is Jo Malone's Wood Sage and Sea Salt fragrance, from £40 (jomalone.co.uk). Rich and elegant, notes of Brazilian orange and rose add a freshness to the luxurious Colonia Leather fragrance by Acqua di Parma, £140 (uk.acquadiparma.com).

Winter warmers

'One of the key accords to try this autumn are vanilla and amber, which are soft and comforting,' says Roja.

'In winter we want to enjoy the warmth of spices combined with soft vanilla-based oriental fragrances.'

BEST NEW BUYS: YSL's classic Opium fragrance has been updated. Coffee, pink pepper, orange blossom and vanilla make up the decadent Black Opium, from £44 (yslbeauty.co.uk). Available from next month.

La Nuit de Boheme by Anna Sui, from £25.50 (theperfumeshop.com) is also launching next month and contains warming notes of vanilla orchid, oud and patchouli.
