A prominent feature of the Valentino show at Paris Fashion Week Fall 2014, the segmented ponytail or bubble-inspired hair recreated a sixties feel. The head-turning hair do has been a popular choice of celebrities on the red carpet too with those like Blake Lively and Heidi Klum opting for it. Actress Jennifer Morrison chanelled a rocker vibe and went for a more teased version of the ponytail at the Pre-Emmy party last year. Though it looks quite complicated, the segmented ponytail is one of the easiest to master.
FUN PLAYFUL LOOK Virginia Holmes, Co-founder Fat Mu academy, says there are lots of different ponies out there to try, it's all about putting a fresh spin on it. 'The bubble pony is the original and easiest updo. It all depends on how you style it. It's cute and chic and easy to re-create. As it is quite playful, it looks great when contrasted with more formal attire. In order to replicate it at home, you need to work a volume mousse or lifting spray into your hair and blow dry. Once done apply a smoothing serum to tame the stray strands. Brush through and gather your hair into a low pony at the nape of the neck. Create the bubbles by tying hair elastics at regular intervals all the way down the lengths of the pony. You can tease the bubbles a little if you want a messy look. Finish with a strong hold spray for a long lasting look.'
EXPERIMENT WITH IT Nisha Desai, make-up artist and hair stylist, Nisha's Bridal World, explains every woman wants to look distinct and more glamorous from the rest. 'The segmented ponytail is not a newly introduced hair style. However Hollywood stars like Blake Lively have made it popular. This look can work for women with short or long hair. But it works best with longer strands and especially with smooth and soft hair as it doesn't look so good on dry hair types. Experiment with this look, use a cute headband or head wrap which will give you a sexy look. You can also opt for an effortlessly messy look with wispy ends and very voluminous segments,' adds Nisha.
GO TO A STYLIST The segmented ponytail is a variation to the classic ponytail, and certainly a more interesting one, the permutations and combinations are many explains Natasha Naegamvala, director, Nalini of Nalini and Yasmin salon. 'The regular bubble ponytail is relatively simple but the one that is on the head is not easy to get right at home as the sections may not be too even and the technique is definitely more complicated. If opting for this style for an evening out, it's best to get it done by a professional,' she says.
