SALISBURY - Beth Lewis has followed in her grandfather's footsteps by opening a full-service hair salon.


Lewis said she has dreamed of opening a salon since she was a little girl, when she would spend time with her grandfather Smithy 'Pete' Petrea. He was a barber at Harviels Barber shop on Green Street in Salisbury for more than 40 years.


'This is not a job, it's a passion,' Lewis said. 'I love seeing my customers walk out with smiles from ear to ear every day.'


Oasis Salon & Spa opened in September at 816 Mooresville Road. The newly designed 2,000-square-foot salon features formal hair designs, extensions, cut and color, as well as manicures, pedicures and waxing.


Oasis specializes in serving bridal parties, offering a free hairstyle for the bride with a party of three or more. The salon also offers a 10 percent discount on any service for active and retired duty military, police, EMT personnel and firefighters, as well as senior citizens.


Lewis said she plans community events throughout the year including fundraisers and toy and coat drives.


Hours are 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday.

New family operating Thai restaurant


SALISBURY - A family has moved from Thailand and Chicago to run a new Thai restaurant in Salisbury.


Sabaidee Thai Sushi has reopened at 2204 S. Main St. in the former location of Bangkok Garden, which moved to downtown Salisbury and changed its name to Bangkok Downtown.


Manager Jenny Lee said she recently moved from Thailand to run the restaurant for her sister, Somphit Veichittavond, who owns the business. Lee's cousin also relocated from Thailand to cook at the restaurant, and her brother has moved from Chicago to serve as the sushi chef.


'It is real Thai food,' Lee said.


Sabaidee offers a $6.95 lunch special every weekday.


Hours are 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 11 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday and noon to 8 p.m. Sunday.

Torres joins Rowan Pediatrics


SALISBURY - Novant Health has named Dr. Jomari Torres to Novant Health Rowan Pediatrics in Salisbury.


Torres received an undergraduate degree from Kansas State University and a doctorate from the Medical College of Wisconsin in 1998. She completed her residency at the National Capital Pediatric Residency Consortium in 2001.


Before joining Novant Health Rowan Pediatrics, she worked as a pediatric hospitalist in Lincoln County.


Novant Health Rowan Pediatrics, located at 530 Corporate Circle, opened in September. Torres joins Dr. Scott Agbuya and Dr. Ashley Ferguson at the clinic.

Wagoner on real estate board


RALEIGH - Anna Gregory Wagoner has been appointed by Gov. Pat McCrory to a three-year term on the North Carolina Real Estate Commission.


A Salisbury native, Wagoner is the daughter of Bill and Anna Mills Wagoner.


Anna Gregory Wagoner is an attorney at Blanco Tackabery & Matamoros in Winston-Salem. She is a member of the North Carolina and Forsyth County bar associations and has served as an adviser for A.E. Finley YMCA Leader's Club in Raleigh, as well as a member of the Raleigh Jaycees and tutor for the Wake County Literacy Council.


She received a bachelor's degree in psychology from Wake Forest University and later attended Wake Forest School of Law.


The real estate commission's primary function is to license and regulate North Carolina's 80,000 real estate agents. It also registers and regulates sales activities at time share projects, where ownership in a single living unit is shared by many persons.


The mission is to protect the public interest in real estate brokerage transactions.


Fields CFO of Cardinal Innovations


KANNAPOLIS - Victor Fields has been named chief financial officer of Cardinal Innovations Healthcare Solutions in Kannapolis.


Fields comes to Cardinal Innovations from The McClatchy Company (formerly Knight-Ridder), where he had a strategic finance role for the past 15 years. McClatchy Company is a newspaper and Internet publisher.


Most recently, he served as vice president for administration and CFO for The Charlotte Observer, Raleigh News and Observer and Rock Hill Herald.

Kohl's opening 8 p.m. Thanksgiving


SALISBURY - Kohl's will open at 8 p.m. on Thanksgiving Day, kicking off its Black Friday event earlier than ever.


Stores nationwide will be open for 28 hours straight - from 8 p.m. Nov. 28 through midnight Friday. The Salisbury Kohl's is located in the Wallace Commons shopping center on Klumac Road, near Interstate 85 exit 74.

Kinzey in alma mater's homecoming program


Salisbury resident Ruth Kinzey was recently tapped by her alma mater, Coe College, for its 100th homecoming program. The college, located in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, featured Kinzey and her recently released book during its three-day celebration, Oct. 18-20.


A reputation strategist and 1977 graduate of Coe, Kinzey shared insights and research from her book, 'Promoting Nonprofit Organizations: A Reputation Management Approach.'


Kinzey's career spans 35 years in the corporate and consulting communication arenas. She owns a reputation management firm, The Kinzey Company, which is headquartered in Salisbury.


Lion's Share Credit Union's Curran honored


SALISBURY - Mark Curran, president/CEO of Lion's Share Credit Union in Salisbury, recently earned the Credit Union Person of the Year award from the Northwest Chapter of the NC Credit Union League.


Curran has a 35-year track record of excellence in the credit union movement.


Curran's career began as a teller at Coastal FCU in 1978 and includes stints at the SC Credit Union League and CUNA Mutual Group. Lion's Share FCU named him president/CEO in 2011. He volunteers at Victory Junction Gang Camp in Randleman.


Food Lion, Ibotta in on mobile app


SALISBURY - Food Lion has joined Ibotta, a mobile app that provides cash rewards to shoppers who share product mentions on Facebook, and perform other brand engagement 'tasks,' according to Supermarket News.


Shoppers at Food Lion, Wal-Mart, ShopRite, Safeway, Kroger and about 45 other chains who download the free app will see offers in a product gallery. They can choose a product, and perform tasks associated with it.


Along with sharing product mentions on social media, other tasks include watching a video, taking a poll and downloading a recipe.


After completing tasks, items are added to the user's checklist. Members earn cash rewards when they purchase the product, and take a picture of their receipt and the product's barcode. The more tasks completed, the greater the rewards.


Coca Cola, General Mills, ConAgra and Kraft are among the manufacturer partners.


New HR director, cardiologist at Lake Norman


MOORESVILLE - Lake Norman Regional Medical Center has named a new human resources director and cardiologist.


Stephanie Williams is the new director of human resources. Williams has most recently served in a similar position at Tennova Healthcare-Physicians Regional Medical Center in Knoxville, Tenn., which is another Health Management Associates' hospital.


Williams received her bachelor's degree from Georgia State University and earned a master's degree in health administration from the University of Phoenix.


She brings 12 years of health-care experience to Lake Norman Regional and earned the Community Health System Presidents Award in September 2012.


Dr. Shomeet Patel, a cardiologist with Sanger Heart & Vascular Institute, has joined the hospital's medical staff.


Patel joins doctors Daniel Koehler, Richard Scherczinger and Stephen Iuliano in Sanger's Lake Norman practice.


Patel received degrees at Sardar Patel University and Pramukhswami Medical College in India. He completed his residency in internal medicine at Mercer University at the Medical Center of Central Georgia in Macon, Ga.


He was named Resident of the Year followed by Cardiology Resident of the Year from Mercer University. He received his fellowship in cardiology from East Carolina University, where he was named Fellow of the Year in Internal Medicine.


101 Mobility employee honored


WILMINGTON - As part of an observance of National Disability Employment Awareness Month, 101 Mobility employee Kelly Mercer was honored at an awards ceremony sponsored by the N.C. Division of Vocational Rehabilitation and the Cape Fear Disability Commission.


The company, which sells equipment to help people with disabilities, has a location in Salisbury at 126 Statesville Boulevard. Mercer works at the corporate headquarters in Wilmington.


'Being a hearing impaired employee has shown me that anything is possible - especially in the workplace environment,' she said. 'I used to think that I was limited by my hearing loss and didn't have enough work options. But it wasn't my disability that held me back, it was my way of thinking.'


Morley to speak on Medicare plan


Tim Morley, a pharmacist at Cannon North Pharmacy in Kannapolis, will speak from 10-11 a.m. at Bethpage Presbyterian Church on Thursday, Nov. 7, as Comfort Keepers strives to continue education programs to seniors and those interested in healthy options and lifestyle choices in aging gracefully.


Morley will discuss the Medicare Advantage Plan.
