(Peter Hvizdak Register) Co-owner Walter Porta, right, and his wife Joanne Porta with a customer, rear right, of W Salon, a hair salon in Madison Friday, October 11, 2013,

'It's all about passion,' said Walter Porta, owner of W Salon. 'Passion, consistency and balance of what you do.'

So it's not surprising that they won the Best Of readers poll for best hair salon.

The W Salon has been in Madison for seven years and at its current location for two years. Porta attributes his successful 32 years in the business to, 'my diligence in my craft and my dedication and focus on having a salon that teaches other people that are coming into the field.'

With a license in hand, hairdressers that join the W Salon and become part of his associates program. They work under his tutelage for a year and then join the team. 'They learn all the mistakes I did before, without doing them. I teach them all the right way,' Porta said. 'They learn under me, what I want my culture to be.'

That culture is 'when you provide a service, it would be the best that you could ever do,' said Porta. 'Give the public the best they could ever have.'

Porto's career started out as a youngster watching his grandfather cut hair at Carlo's Barber Shop in New Haven. He went on to get his barber and hairdresser licenses, and enhanced his education with training in London.

Learning new techniques, products and styles is the cornerstone of his success. He developed two Balayage coloring tools, a comb and a palate. 'Balayage is the French word for sweep, so you are sweeping color onto the hair,' explained Porta.

In addition, the salon prides itself on its unique cutting technique. 'We have our own way of cutting, which is called Format Five,' said Porta. 'So there's five sections of the hair and it gives you a unique haircut. A haircut made for you.'

'We concentrate on everything we do,' said Porta. 'We're very dedicated to the culture. We love the hair industry and we try to bring the best service and the best looks to people.'

Even with all his years of experience and a successful career, Porta said, 'there are always a lot of goals to achieve. Keep going forward, always.' Continued...
