Black hair salon owners in Bergen County say they're losing business

BERGEN COUNTY - Owners and independent stylists at black hair salons in Bergen County say they're losing their clientele to white and Hispanic establishments, the Record reported.

Ronald Reid, owner of Razzle Dazzle in Teaneck, said African-Americans have lost a 'sense of self' by patronizing cheaper salons owned by Dominicans.

Lori Tharps, a Temple University assistant professor and co-author of 'Hair Story: Untangling the Roots of Black Hair in America,' said the younger generation feels no responsibility to support black hair salons, once viewed as central meeting places in the African-American community. And Therese Flaherty, director of the Small Business Development Center at the Wharton School of the University of Pennyslvania, said minority businesses that serve the whole community rather than focusing on their own are better able to compete.
