IT'S the new in-thing - using natural oils and butters for the hair and skin instead of products with harmful chemicals. Ask any beauty supply store and they'll tell you of the rise in requests for products like argan and coconut oils, which have been touted as extremely good for moisturising.
Natural oils have been used by women the world over for centuries, but more and more women today are finding that their grandmother's methods are working better than anything else.
'On any one day you have dozens of women coming in asking for oils and butters,' Camille Rogers, a salesgirl at a beauty supply store in downtown Kingston said. 'More women are going natural, and with the popularity of sites like blackgirllonghair.com, even those with relaxed hair are asking for natural products.'
She said especially popular is the sweet-smelling Argan oil and coconut oil.
Below are a few of the popular oils and their benefits to hair and skin.
1. Argan oil
Argan oil is a plant oil produced from the kernels of the argan tree that is endemic to Morocco. Touted by celebrities, it creates shine, adds moisture and body to the hair. It helps protect against damage caused by chemicals, excessive heat from styling and environmental factors. It helps repair dry, damaged hair, strengthens and prevents breakage. It restores, protects and moisturises hair, scalp and skin.
2. Coconut oil
Pure coconut oil is extracted from the coconut plant. It's a great moisturiser for all types of skin. It delays wrinkles and sagging of the skin. Used in the hair, it's a great conditioner and moisturiser. It softens the hair and conditions the scalp, leaving the hair with a shiny lustre. It can also be used on the scalp to get rid of dandruff.
It is great for use as a hot oil treatment.
3. Castor oil
Castor oil is obtained by pressing the seeds of the Castor plant. Massaged into the scalp, it promotes healthy hair growth and helps scalp problems. If you have dry, relaxed or coloured hair, castor oil can be added to your favourite conditioner. It adds extra moisture to your hair and seals it in. It can be used for hot oil treatments and massaged into the skin, helps prevent skin problems such as eczema, psoriasis, itchy skin and rashes.
Massaged directly into the scalp, it prevents dandruff, itchy scalp, and dry scalp.
4. Olive oil
Olive oil is a fat obtained from the olive. Pure olive oil is rich in vitamins and antioxidants and helps balance your skin's moisture. It softens and soothes the skin, and can be used for hot oil treatment and in massages.
Olive oil has antioxidants and good fats which help to heal the skin. It helps irritation and sunburn and helps with the elasticity of the skin, making stretch marks less visible.
It will get rid of chapped lips and reduce under-eye wrinkles. Olive oil is also good for the nails, making them stronger and healthier. It is also a great solution for cracked heels.
5. Cocoa butter
Cocoa butter is extracted from the cocoa bean. It is an excellent all over body moisturiser, recommended by plastic surgeons to retain moisture in skin and reduce scarring from new surgical scars. In its raw form, it softens and smoothes the skin and is recommended for treatment of conditions like dermatitis and eczema. It is also widely used for the treatment and prevention of stretch marks.
6. Shea butter
Shea butter is extracted from the nut of the African shea tree. It helps keeps the skin clear and healthy and is particularly beneficial for dry or sun-exposed skin.
It helps hydrate the skin and helps to prevent premature wrinkles, premature facial lines and premature slackened skin.
It acts as a skin protector and revitaliser. It soothes rough, dry or chapped skin on contact and helps soften and revitalise dry or damaged hair.
Shea butter is used as an ingredient in soaps, shampoos, conditioners, hair relaxers, lotions and hand and body creams.
