Indena launches new hair strengthening plant extract

Ingredients supplier Indena is launching its latest hair product utilising the herbaceous centella plant following the results of its clinical study which shows it improves hair follicle resistance.

Its Centella asiatica (L.) extract, Centerox, shows high tolerability, promising strengthening and invigorating potential on hair, according to the results, and the Italian frim says it is designed for products to improve hair follicle resistance and reduce hair loss due to frequent washing.

Centerox is a novel ingredient Indena is presenting at in-Cosmetics in Hamburg as the company says it has shown the ability to strengthen fragile hair submitted to intense washing as well as brushing and combing, reflecting in the clinical model the conditions hair is experiencing daily.

Testing

The clinical trial was conducted on both men and women who were all selected for suffering from two scalp disorders, and came out positive for the ingredients.

The treated group of sufferers of telogen effluvium or androgenic alopecia showed a statistically significant increase of hair resistance to traction by 25% in the pull test evaluation and a big decrease of the number of hair lost during washing in the wash test assessment.

Indena also says that the tolerability of the active ingredient within the 8 weeks' treatment has been evaluated on the basis of a clinical assessment of dandruff, seborrhea, erythema, and itching.

'No variation has been induced in any of the investigated parameters thus indicating that the treatment may be considered well tolerated,' says the company.

Additional mechanistic in vitro investigations are on-going to better elucidate the observed biological activity.

Hair importance

Hair follicles, in fact, represent our body's only permanently regenerating organ with a dense capillary network surrounding the hair follicle and the associated sebaceous gland.

The appearance of hair is closely connected with our overall appearance and esteem, with a number of us worrying about thinning and ageing hair.

This, in turn, creates a problem as people strive to make sure their hair looks as good as possible, and this exposes it to a number of products, and intense blow-drying and brushing which can cause the hair to thin and lose strength.
