Diet and Hair Loss


A well-balanced diet containing protein, amino acids, and vitamins very much contributes to the quality and health of your hair. Iron deficiency, due to heavy menstrual bleeding in women or a lack of meat products in the diet, could seriously affect the health of your hair. Crash diets and eating disorders can damage hair dramatically, causing fine, brittle hair, broken hair and hair loss. Diet and hair loss are very much linked.


A diet rich in calcium, iron and silica is good to encourage the growth of healthy hair. You can get silica in oats. Green, leafy vegetables are a good source of minerals. Cherry juice, dried fruits, liver, eggs, dates and green vegetables provide iron (avoid liver if you are pregnant). Vitamin C improves the absorption of iron. Iron is good if you have a tendency towards anemia. Most fruits and vegetables give you vitamin C.


If you feel your diet is lacking in nutrients or you just want a backup in case, you could take supplements. Multi-vitamin and mineral supplements are good and will provide your body with everything it needs to function well. The state of your skin, nails and hair reflect what you put into your body. Alcohol can deplete vitamin and mineral stores within the body and smoking can starve you of oxygen.


Male pattern baldness is thought to be due to increased levels of testosterone in puberty and some think that a low fat diet can counter this. Soy protein stimulates hair growth and helps to prevent baldness. You can get soy protein from soy milk, tofu, eggs, fish, yogurt and beans.


If hair loss is because of thyroid problems, vitamin A and iodine are important. You should try to eat vegetables such as spinach or carrots in unrefined, cold-pressed seed oils like flax, walnut or pumpkin seed and sea salt. If you have an iodine deficiency, good foods to eat include turnips, cabbage, millet, soy beans, peanuts, mustard and pine nuts. Studies in the former Soviet Union have shown that an increased intake of silica can promote hair growth. Silica is found in red and green peppers, potato skins and cucumber. It is also added to some shampoos to prevent baldness and encourage hair to be strong and glossy.


Thinning hair in women can be a symptom of a gastrointestinal tract problem, a sign of insufficient stomach acid or a zinc, protein or other nutritional deficiency. If you take 2 acidophilus tablets after or between meals for 2 months, this might help. This is 4 to 6 tablets per day.


You should note that excessive intake of vitamin A can actually lead to hair loss, so a balanced diet is very important. It's all about moderation and balancing your body.
