How to: Care for hair in Autumn
This week I've found my hair to be falling a little flat. With central heating coming back on to tackle the chill, it can dry out our hair and leave it static; I've had to up the ante with my hair care this Autumn.
I use a rich, moisturising shampoo and conditioner on my fine hair to hydrate my dry locks and seal in the moisture. I like Dove's Intensive Repair range as it penetrates the hair where it can feel brittle to strengthen and nourish each strand.
A conditioning leave in treatment like Redken's Anti-Snap £14.75 applied to the ends of your hair protects hair from the heat you use drying and straightening each morning and it seals any split ends to repair the hair follicles and prevent further damage.
To add volume to flat hair, I recommend applying a thickening spray to the roots, I'm currently using Bumble and Bumbles hair spray from £7.50 and tipping your head upside down and drying hair until it is about 80% dry then go in with a round bristled brush to smooth and finish. This trick adds a lot of height in your hair and gives the illusion of thick, voluminous hair.
If your hair is really dry, you could add a hair oil to either towel-dry hair or right at the end of styling to add extra moisture and make hair sleek and glossy. A favourite of mine is the original Moroccan Oil, £30.
Finally, use a flexible hold hairspray, you want enough hold to resist the wind and all other weather elements but if you go for the extra strength finish, it can leave your hair looking too stiff and 'crispy'. This will also help with fighting static, fly-away hairs.
As a weekly treat, use a conditioning mask on your hair and let it sit for half an hour on your hair to really get to work. I like Philip Kingsley and Dove for their hair masks. An extra tip would be to wrap your hair in cling-film while the treatment is on, it isn't pretty but it's all in the name of beautiful, healthy hair.
