Trends in hair color change as fast as we can book an appointment with our colorist. So we totally get why making that permanent, or semipermanent, change can give you pause. Coloring your hair can be damaging and high-maintenance, and once you decide to go back, you can never really get to your natural color. What if we told you that you could color your hair as often as you wanted without risking any of the above? Read on, dear reader.
Extensions are typically associated with length, volume, and sometimes Paris Hilton, but we talked to Meri Kate O'Connor, a colorist at Eva Scrivo salon in New York City, about using extensions to change your hair color in lieu of dye. One look that O'Connor creates with faux strands is ombré. 'Ombré is a trend that will never go away,' she explains. 'It mimics the way the sun hits your hair naturally. However, it's now being toned down from the extreme we saw last season to a more natural, sun-kissed look.' Our celeb inspiration: Victoria's Secret Angel Lily Aldridge (above).
O'Connor took us through achieving the look without dye. 'For the ombré effect, the color of the extensions should be two to four shades lighter than your natural color. It's best to mix them up by keeping the lighter sections around your face and placing the darker ones underneath. The placement of these extensions is important for this look, so make sure to keep the most concentrated sections toward the bottom and gradually place fewer and fewer pieces as you move toward the top of the head.' For ombré, O'Connor will use anywhere from four to 12 pieces based on the thickness. (Her favorite come from the House of European Hair.)
The best thing about coloring your hair with extensions is that they're temporary, the process takes about half an hour, and you can change the color as often as you want.
