Medicines for hair loss

Hair loss is a serious condition which now affects several people, both men as well as women. But the good news is, there are several ways to tackle this problem. From hair transplants, to fake hair to concealers - loss of hair can be rectified today. But if your hair loss isn't too severe, it can be reversed with the help of certain medications. But before using any of these, it is vital to visit a trichologist who can examine your scalp and then prescribe the right one depending on your condition. Here are of the most effective hair loss medications.

There are several kinds of hair loss and therefore the medications also differ. One common type is patchy hair loss or alopecia areata. It is usually an autoimmune condition where the body starts attacking the hair follicles. This results in hair falling out from the scalp in a patchy manner. Becau se of this, it becomes a little difficult to treat this condition. But certain medications include:

Contact immunotherapy is the most effective way to treat patchy hair loss. In this, a medicine is applied on the scalp weekly once which makes the skin red and scaly. One can see some hair growth within 3 months of the usage. But beware side-effects like a severe rash and swollen lymph nodes are common.

Homeopathy is another way to treat this kind of hair loss. After minutely evaluating the cause of one's patchy loss, a homeopath can prescribe the right treatment. For example, sudden patchy hair loss due to emotional grief, trauma, etc is treated using Ignatia Amara.

Other medications such as oral steroids, immune-suppressants are also used to treat alopecia areata but they too have potential side-effects to it is best to consult a good specialist before starting this treatment.

This type of hair loss is distinguishable due to the loss of hair from the crown area. Quite common in males, its triggers include diabetes, high blood pressure, prostatic problems, and other conditions which cause hormonal imbalances in the body. There are several stages of this hair loss and in the initial ones, medications can help. Medically, it is known as androgenic alopecia.

Minoxidil is a solution which is used to treat this type of hair loss. It needs to be applied on the scalp to lessen the hair fall. But the hitch is, one needs to wean it off slowly as stopping its usage can increase one's hair loss. Also, if applied on the skin or face, it can lead to unwanted hair growth.

Dutasteride is another medication for male pattern baldness. It blocks the production of binding of testosterone in the scalp which reduces hair loss. But a person using this medication is not permitted to donate blood for up to six months after taking this medication. Finasteride is another pill which helps block the action of hormones in the scalp.

Homeopathy also has different ways to treat male pattern baldness. Some of the treatments include the usage of phosphorous, lycopodium clavatum and acid phosphoricum. Other remedies include Thuja Occidentalis and Sabal Serrulata which have the ability to even reverse hair loss.

Mintop is a solution is also used to reverse hair loss. It can be quite strong so it is better to consult a doctor on how much to use it and of what strength. Usually, you may be asked to start with a milder solution such as 2% and only after a few months can you increase it to 5%, once your body gets used to it.

Though biotin supplements aren't very effective on their own, they can be used along with other medications to fasten the hair growth process. There are several other medications in the market that claim to reverse hair loss but their efficacy hasn't been proven clinically. We recommend visiting a specialist before self-medicating yourself.
