Proteas paceman Wayne Parnell had a bad hair day yesterday, with his 'poor' bowling in the series decider T20 match in Australia being unflatteringly compared with his 'shocking' hairstyle.
The quick bowler came under fire from many fans on social media, as the national cricket team slumped to a two-wicket defeat in the three-match series.
Parnell, with his long-on-top locks pulled back into a vaguely Oriental ponytail and sides shorn, proved expensive, going for 4-43.
In Australia, his thatch has been the talk of the town.
Parnell told Independent Newspapers he didn't know what all the fuss was about: 'I like it. Look, go walk down the street here in Sydney, every fourth person's got a hairdo like this.'
He got his 'do' on holiday in Thailand earlier this year. 'I noticed someone else with a similar cut, and thought it was cool. It's quite a mainstream hairstyle,' he said.
But fans are unforgiving in criticising their sports stars, especially in defeat.
Twitter user @onegoodfoot quipped: 'Wayne Parnell cost us the match. He's a liability to the team. Send him back to provincial cricket. And make him cut his hair.'
@phillippp_ said: 'Wayne Parnell your bowling was as good as your hair.'
Ross Hindle added: 'Wayne Parnell... Maybe the worst death bowler of this decade? The haircut doesn't help his cause either.'
Lereesen Naidoo said: 'Wayne Parnell needs some consistency with his length - both for his hair and for his bowling.'
@crowdiegal quipped: '#AUSvsSA can't be bothered riffing on poor Quinton de Kock's name, he can't help that unlike Wayne Parnell who can help his hair.'
Parnell was among the top 10 trending topics in South Africa yesterday.
The South African side will face Australia in the five-match one-day internationals, which start in Perth on Friday. - Daily News
