Renovated building hosts bakery, hair salon and more

A building recently renovated into a shopping complex at the corner of Queen and Bryan streets is already filling up with new businesses.

Two new businesses - a cake shop and hair salon - opened this month in the old MADD building. A sports bar and an upholstery shop will open in a week or two.

Extensive work was done to the property, including adding a large paved parking lot, landscaping, lighting and extending the sidewalks.

Patricia Foye opened Kreative Cakez on March 1 in one of the small shops at 311 Bryan St.. Inside are displays of artfully decorated cakes, cookies and candies.

Foye, who took a cake decorating class in high school 20 years ago, said she has always dreamed of owning a bakery.

'Since I graduated in 1993, I've been messing around with cakes,' Foye said.

She has actually worked in most of the bakery shops in New Bern, including Laura's Cakes and Kitty's Cakes & Bakery.
